Must-Have Skills to Include on a Tax Senior Resume

By Chris Freyer - August 12th, 2024
Industry Insights

Demonstrating your readiness to excel as a Tax Senior starts with crafting a resume that reveals the skills you’ve amassed over the years and makes you stand out in this competitive and dynamic field.

Before we dig into the technical capabilities recruiters expect from a Tax Senior, let’s quickly review a few of the soft skills that can also enhance your visibility as a well-rounded candidate. Try to pepper these into your resume, either explicitly in the skills section or implicitly in the experience bullets:

  • Analysis: How you distill complex financial and legal data to derive actionable tax insights.
  • Attention to Detail: How you prepare precise, compliant, and error-free tax filings.
  • Problem-Solving: How you handle disputes, negotiate resolutions, and clear up tax issues.
  • Communication: How you explain tax concepts to less-informed clients or colleagues.
  • Project Management: How you conquer deadlines and deliverables on multiple tax projects.
  • Continuous Learning: How you stay up to date with changes in tax laws and regulations.
  • Client Retention: How you build and maintain strong relationships with tax clients.
  • Leadership/Collaboration: How you manage tax teams and work across departments.

Now for the hard stuff. Hiring managers will be looking for these essential capabilities in a Tax Senior:

Tax Compliance Expertise

You possess an in-depth understanding of frequently changing federal, state, and local tax regulations, and you know how to interpret and apply them. Highlight specific compliance projects you’ve managed, along with the training and certifications (such as CPA or Enrolled Agent) you’ve completed.

Tax Planning and Strategy

You develop and implement tax strategies that optimize a company’s tax position and minimize its liabilities. Give examples of the data-driven tax decisions you’ve made, particularly when they have improved business operations or identified savings.

Proficiency with Tax Software and Digital Tools

You wield tax software and tech with ease to automate processes and ensure accuracy. Show how you’re an expert in standard financial tools like Quicken, SAP, and Oracle and are studying up on more advanced resources like ProSeries, TaxAct, or CCH Axcess Tax if you’re not already using them.

Knowledge of Emerging Tax Trends — and Threats

You go beyond fundamental tax law to comprehend the implications of globalization, blockchain, and cryptocurrency. Demonstrate how you’ve been preparing for what’s next by embracing these opportunities while deploying your cybersecurity expertise so sensitive client data remains protected.

Publishing, Presenting, and Proactivity

You never rest on your laurels. In today’s financial landscape, Tax Seniors need to constantly exhibit their expertise and credibility. List any articles or white papers on emerging tax scenarios that you’ve produced, describe the leadership you’ve displayed in tax forums and seminars/webinars, and mention the insights into new tax legislation or strategies you’ve passed on through consulting gigs, mentorships, and even pro bono work.

If you’re lacking in any of those areas, then now’s the time to up your game so you can reflect those efforts in your next resume and grab the Tax Senior brass ring!
